Poker is a card game of chance that involves betting, raising and folding. There are countless variations of the game, but the basic principles remain the same. In the most common form, poker is played by a number of players, with each player betting into the pot based on the strength of their hand. The highest hand wins the pot. Players may also bluff, placing bets that they don\u2019t have the best hand. This is called \u201ccalling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Depending on the variant of poker being played, one or more players are required to make forced bets, called the ante or blind. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals each player two cards face down, which they keep hidden from other players. In some games a player will be allowed to cut the deck more than once.<\/p>\n
Once the cards are dealt, the first of many betting rounds begins. When a player bets, the players to his or her left can call that bet by putting the same amount of chips into the pot; raise that bet (to add more money to the pot); or drop (to fold).<\/p>\n
While poker is an intensely strategic game and it\u2019s impossible to tell what someone\u2019s hand is without knowing the context of the hand, there are certain hands that win more frequently than others.
