Poker is a card game in which players place bets into a pot. There are a few key rules to remember when playing.<\/p>\n
First, you must ante something. This varies by game and typically is an amount like a nickel. Then you are dealt cards by the dealer. When betting gets around to you, you can raise or check. Raising means to bet a certain amount on the strength of your hand and checking means you don\u2019t want to raise.<\/p>\n
Once everyone has either raised or folded, the cards are flipped over and another round of betting begins. This is called the flop. The dealer \u201cburns\u201d one of the cards, which is placed face down on the table and out of play, and then places the top three cards on the remaining deck face up in the middle of the table.<\/p>\n
The highest hand wins the pot. If two hands have the same kind of hand (pair, flush, straight, etc), the higher high card breaks the tie. If no one has a pair, the highest high card wins ties too. It is important to remember that while poker involves a large element of chance, winning players make decisions based on probability, psychology and game theory.
