During each round of poker, players choose five cards from which to form a hand. If a player has the best hand, he wins the pot. The winning hand is usually determined by the highest card. Some poker variants don’t consider flushes, straights, or aces in determining the winner.<\/p>\n
After a flop, a player can make a bet, raise, or fold. A bet is said to be raised when a player bets more than the previous bettor. If a player folds, he doesn’t compete for the pot. When all players have folded, betting is suspended and play moves to the next round.<\/p>\n
In three-card brag, a player may bet that he has the best hand. However, if he doesn’t, he is a “drop.” During a betting interval, all but one player can “fold,” which means that they don’t have a hand that is likely to win.<\/p>\n
In games such as Texas hold ’em, the player who has the best hand wins the pot. In some poker variations, the pot is divided between the highest and lowest hands. The winning hand is also determined by the second-highest card. In the case of a four-of-a-kind, the fifth card is the kicker.<\/p>\n
The earliest versions of poker probably came from the Persian game of as nas. It is also thought that French settlers in New Orleans learned the game from Persian sailors.
